Dr. Melu Jean Quirante: Doctor Who Founded Huntsville Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The doctor who founded Huntsville Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which has saved the lives of thousands of premature infants, has died. Dr. Melu Jean Quirante was a local pediatrician in her later years, after founding the NICU in 1973 and working there for 20 years.
Her funeral was Saturday, at Berryhill Funeral Home. Dr. Quirante was 69 years old. She died March 16.
Nurses who worked with Dr. Quirante say she was very dedicated to the premature babies in the nursery, but strict. They say everything had to be up to a standard, which was crucial in saving these babies' lives. MORE...
