Balintawak Memoir '68 |

I have known Tessie from the time she entered the clinical
division of the B.S. Medical Technology program. As a student, she was very bright, scholarly
and diligent. She was in my hematology
and histopath classes.
To all who knew her, it was no surprise when she was put in charge of
the program when Mrs Hedrick returned permanently to the United.States of America. In the meantime, my husband and I were in the
U.S. furthering our education. Shortly after
my husband and I accepted the invitation of the General Conference of
Seventh-day Adventists to return to the Philippines and join the workforce
at the Manila Sanitarium and Hospital,
Tessie and I were reunited. Interestingly
enough, this time around, Tessie and I were no longer student and teacher,
respectively, but faculty colleagues in the Medical Technology program. Meanwhile,
my husband, Dr Miguelito Fernando, headed the OB-GYN department. It became his joy and honor to attend the
delivery of Tessie’s daughter, Crister, and son, Arvin!
Tessie was a trusted friend and loyal colleague. We kept in touch through the years. We visited her family at Andrews University in Michigan while my son contemplated the possibility of studying there. Whenever possible, she
visited us in California and we saw each other
during alumni conventions.

I could describe Tessie in three words: intelligent, kind, and godly. Her students love and admire her because of her dedication in teaching to serve the Lord.
She used to say to me: "You always leave me!" Early on, I went to Singapore. Then to the United States of America. But she stayed in the Philippines because of her dedication to serve first her own country.
During my last two visits before her passing, she called me: "My BFF1" Best Friend Forever!. It really touched my heart. I will surely miss her. Thank God we have faith we shall see her again in that bright morning. See you in the morning, my BFF!
