Amador Geslani Tamayo: October 12, 1954 - September 7, 2020

Amador Geslani Tamayo: Oct 12, 1954 - Sept 7, 2020
Philippine Union College Academy, 1971
PUC, BSMath 1976

For decades, violinists, violists, cellists went to cellist, teacher, and the country's only German-trained luthier, Amador Tamayo, for the service and crafting of their instruments. And then in September [2020], came the long-dreaded catastrophe: Felled by his heart condition, Amador Tamayo passed away. This and the next MAESTRO FILIPINO, DZFE's Tiffany talks to three well-known musical figures—beginning with violinist Gina Medina-Perez and pianist Mayos Esmilla—for a portrait of a singular man, and to grasp the extent of the vacuum he has left behind. We'll also hear music from a rare recording featuring Amador Tamayo as cello soloist.

This MAESTRO FILIPINO, "Remembering Amador Tamayo" Pt02, DZFE's Tiffany hears from Taiwan-based cellist Victor Coo, who began his journey as a cellist under the tutelage of Amador Tamayo, and whose friendship with the luthier endured until the end. We'll also hear more of Amador Tamayo's playing, from a rare performance recording.

This picture was taken after a recital in Makati, BDO, in 2008, with my wife. It was his first time to hear me play a recital live using a cello that he made for me in 2006. Look at the smile, the teacher, the student...Today, I recorded the Sarabande of the 2nd Suite in D minor by Bach, using the same cello he made, and also the bow he graciously gave me, a Mathias Thoma, on my 2nd year in college. - Victor Coo
