To Our Dear Faculty, Alumni, Students, and Friends:
For the past year, our University has called for prayer and intercession for our Doctor of Medicine program. We know that many of you have joined us in imploring God’s favor so that we could offer the Doctor of Medicine program this school year 2014-2015. Yesterday, as scheduled, the CHED Technical Committee for Medical Education composed of 5 members, a PRC representative included, visited our campus and the Adventist Medical Center-Manila (MAMC) our base hospital to see our preparedness to offer the program. At about 6:00 in the evening, the CHED’s decision was – “AUP is denied to open the Doctor of Medicine Program for this School Year 2014-2015.”
We know that this recent decision of the CHED regarding our application is disheartening to our University and to all of you who expected a positive answer to our prayers. But this result we believe is God’s answer to our prayers and intercessions. God knows the best for us and for His University. In His perfect time, He will guide us to commence our Doctor of Medicine program.
One good news however is that the denial to offer the Doctor of Medicine program this school-year 2014-2015 is not a permanent closure of the door for AUP to offer it. In fact, the technical committee members have encouraged our University to reapply this coming June, so that they could revisit us again in October 2014. They counseled us that the best time to begin the acceptance of student applications should not be later than November 2014, so that we can get the best students for the inaugural class, knowing that selection of students is important in aiming for an excellent passing rate for the first batch of medical graduates in the Physician Licensure Exam.
Based on the decision document that the technical panel has given to our University last night, AUP was evaluated in 8 areas which are curriculum, laboratory facilities, clerkship, base hospital, faculty, admission and retention, library holdings, and physical facilities. Their findings state that we have two major areas of concern to be accomplished to be compliant with the CHED requirements. Firstly, we need more physicians who have medical school teaching experience, especially for the basic sciences subjects. The need is for teacher/physicians who will ideally prepare the medical graduates for primary & community health care, rather than tertiary & hospital-based practice. Secondly, our base hospital, the Adventist Medical Center-Manila (or MAMC), needs more service/charity patients, both for out-patient and in-patient, to provide the needed clinical experience for the 25 students we plan for the inaugural class. The model of medical education in the Philippines will be changed from just requiring clinical clerks certain number of hours of clinical exposure, to that of completing a specific number of medical/surgical cases attended to.
With the result of the visit and evaluation, we now clearly see the things that should be done. Complying with the remaining challenges are indeed great but we shall continue to work hard and pray for the realization of our corporate and individual dream of establishing a Doctor of Medicine program here in our campus.
We thank you all for your prayers and support. Let us continue to trust God and hold on to His promises that He will guide and lead us till He comes.
Respectfully yours,
Dr. Francisco D. Gayoba, DTheol
President,
Adventist University of the Philippines
