AUP COM Update: Tidings of Great Joy!!

Adventist University of the Philippines
College of Medicine
24 December 2014

My Dear AUPCOM Faculty,

Tidings of Great Joy!!

As we celebrate Christ's birthday this Christmas, let us especially thank our Almighty God that in His perfect time He has answered our fervent prayers to open our College of Medicine. The rigorous preparations and the long wait have made the much-awaited good news sweeter. The official CHED announcement came just before the Christmas break last week, in time for the Public Hearing on the new PSG (provisions, standards, and guidelines) for Medical Schools held at the PMA Auditorium last December 19, which all medical school deans and department chairs in the country had to attend.

The fact that the final GO signal has been given means that we will all gear up for our very first batch of medical students for the opening of classes in August 2015. Our global sister institution, the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California, will be sending faculty-lecturers from January to June 2015, to continue the program they had started since 2013 toward our faculty development training. We will send you announcements of the schedule and topics and venue as soon as we finalize the arrangements with them.

By middle of January, we will be accepting applications to our medical school. Soon thereafter, our appointed admissions committee will be hard at work to stringently select the top applicants, based on the admissions criteria our AUPCOM leadership has established (also in close consultation with admissions experts of Loma Linda University School of Medicine), to ensure that we get the very best material for our showcase first batch of students, and more importantly ascertain that our vision/mission/philosophy as a God-ordained medical school will never be compromised.

Our ultimate goal, our intended outcome, is to produce the "5-star physician" described by the WHO and the CHED, who is a clinician, an academician, a researcher, a social mobilizer, and a manager-administrator. As a medical graduate of AUPCOM, in addition to the above, ours will be a physician missionary who will heal both body and spirit, as exemplified in our motto: "Through Christ, Healing and Wholeness".

Kindly await my future announcements, but meanwhile have a HAPPY and JOYOUS CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR Celebrations!!! To God be the Glory!

In Christ's service,

Dr. Doris Mendoza

NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH
CHED finally approves AUP's Application to Open Doctor of Medicine Program in August 2015!
TO GOD BE THE GLORY! This is the praise song of every faculty, students, and alumni of AUP together with the Adventist church leaders and members all over the world who have been praying for the approval of AUP's application to open the Doctor of Medicine program in August 2015. The long wait of more than 30 years is finally over when the Commission on Higher Education during its Commissioners' en banc meeting on December 17,2014 approved AUP's application. This was announced by Dr. Francisco Gayoba during the the AUP workers' yearend fellowship at the university gym on December 18, 2014. Below is the message of Dr. Francisco Gayoba, President of the Adventist University of the Philippines:

"The approval process was different this time. We did not get any information from the Technical Committee, whether we met all the requirements or we still have deficiencies. We were just told to wait until the CHED Commission en Banc makes the decision. The Commission met several times since September but our application was not in the agenda. We learned just a few days ago that our application was in the agenda already but again, we did not know what the recommendation of the Technical Committee was." - FG

Dear Alumni and Friends:
We praise the Lord for the news we received today. The 35-year-old dream of starting the MD program in the Philippines is coming to pass. To God be the Glory!
The journey has been difficult but the Lord has been guiding all the way. God has worked through various ways and means to make the dream come true. We praise Him for your prayers and support. Were it not for the encouragement of the Church leaders, from the local missions and conferences, the North Philippine Union Conference, the Southern Asia Pacific Division, and the General Conference, we would not have the determination to keep on. Loma Linda University had sent several consultants to assist us in the preparations. Our leaders did not only provide counsel but strength to the vision.
This project would not have been possible without the support of our alumni and friends. You trusted us and encouraged us. We did not start with much when the ground was broken end of 2011. Just a mustard seed. God was working in the hearts of those who believed. Two and a half years after, the Alumni Hall was finished and we satisfied the facilities requirement. The building is a monument to those who believed.
Three times the Technical Committee on Medical Education checked our readiness to open the program. Step by step, we worked hard. God provided people to lead the program. Many times we could not understand why the delay nor the detours. But the Lord continued to lead. Just before the last visit, we received notice that we had complied with almost all the curricular requirements except the base hospital issue. Since August 2014, our College of Medicine team with the Academic leaders, as they have been since the beginning, worked double time. We had submitted our compliance report by end of September and had been waiting since then for the decision. The approval process was different this time. We did not get any information from the Technical Committee, whether we met all the requirements or we still have deficiencies. We were just told to wait until the CHED Commission en Banc makes the decision. The Commission met several times since September but our application was not in the agenda. We learned just a few days ago that our application was in the agenda already but again, we did not know what the recommendation of the Technical Committee was.

The faculty and staff had a special prayer meeting yesterday because we knew the Commission was meeting that day. Though we have not received the official written notification, the CHED director for our region called us up this noon and informed us that we can announce the approved application to open the Doctor of Medicine program by August 2015. God be Praised!
“Ebenezer, Thus far the Lord has helped us." To each of you who has a part of this faith project, we give our thanks for allowing God to use you. Your prayers and gifts are part of this journey. We still have some work to do. We have not finished raising the full amount that will cover the cost of the building. A remaining challenge is to complete the team that will actually operate the program and produce medical missionaries. These still need our prayers and support. Let us continue to work and give, trusting that even as God has blessed us thus far, He will continue to bless our labor of love and work of faith.
To Him be the Honor and Glory, forever and ever.
Maranatha!
Francisco Gayoba

"The newly organized Department of Medical Education within the LLU School of Medicine has formed a working group to collaborate with Dr. Mendoza and her team: Tammi Thomas, MD; Lawrence Loo, MD; and Daniel Giang, MD. They will focus their efforts on developing the curriculum, building a strong faculty, upgrading the facilities and admitting the first class of students. AUP intends to accept its first class of 20 students in June 2014 and will use Adventist Medical Center-Manila as its primary clinical teaching site. In addition, the new faculty at AUP will be enrolled in the online Master of Science degree program in Health Professions Education—an inter-professional graduate program at Loma Linda University designed to prepare clinicians to teach in the classroom."

Dear Dr Mendoza,

Thank you for your prompt reply and for sharing your understanding of the circumstances of your "application".--in reality, a call or invitation to accept the position you were offered.  Just to let you know alumni were made to believe a search committee was tasked to screen/interview a fair number of qualified prospective "applicants" which evidently did not happen as promised..  Please don't let my revelation to make you feel unwelcome for this is not my intention.  I look forward to getting us better acquainted.  Give me a call when you visit southern California.

Blessings,

Joselito

Dear Brother Joselito Coo,

Greetings from Iloilo City!  Thank you for your letter.
I am presently a full-time faculty (since 1977), with the rank of Professor V at West Visayas State University College of Medicine, in Iloilo City,  where I have been a proud teacher of many brilliant and devout SDA medical students through 35 years, and who are now successful physicians all over the world, California, USA included.  My retirement is not due until November 2015.
Following are my reactions and clarifications to your letter.

The AUP Cyberlink report is essentially correct, EXCEPT where it says "sole applicant to the advertised position of College Dean."

Firstly, I did not apply for the position.  Secondly, I did not know beforehand that there was a need to fill such position.  And, Thirdly, I did not know then about the long-proposed AUP College of Medicine opening within the next two years.

Sometime in September of 2011, however, the leadership of AUP communicated with me, and  I was invited to answer the call to be the founding dean of the proposed AUP College of Medicine, which was to be established after the mold of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. I was informed that the College would open its doors to the first batch of medical students on June 2013. They invited me to come visit AUP and the medical building construction site, and brought me to a meeting with the leaders of the proposed training hospital for the medical school - the Manila Adventist Medical Center. These events happened in late September 2011.

The AUP President and VP for Academics asked me to accept their nomination to be recommended to the Board. With much prayers and discernment from God, and because I share the same vision of establishing a medical school in our country, which is different and separate from the rest, in that it would teach and implement God's precepts (especially those on Sabbath-keeping, healthy lifestyle and food choices, dedicated teaching and compassionate healing), I accepted the nomination, believing it to be God-ordained.  I was then requested to send my credentials, to which I complied.
In January 2012, I was informed that the Board of Trustees accepted the recommendation for me to be the founding Dean of AUP College of Medicine, effective June 2013.

Presently, I am still very much a full-time medical faculty here at WVSU College of Medicine, where I am also additionally the Chairperson of the WVSU Unified Bio-Medical Research Ethics Review Board.

I hope I have clarified certain basic points for you.

May the Lord continue to bless His children who do His will and represent Him wherever they are in the different parts of the world.

Brother Joselito, let us continue winning more souls for our God to hasten Jesus' second coming.  It is at this momentous time in our world's history when we most realize the truth of this dictum: " Only one life, 'twill soon be past; Only what's done for Christ will last."

Sincerely,
Dr. Doris A. Mendoza

Dear Dr Mendoza,

First, let me introduce myself.  I'm an alumnus '67 of Philippine Union College, now Adventist University of the Philippines.  I presently reside in Los Angeles, California with my wife.

My reason for writing you.  I just read a repost (in Facebook) of an announcement in the AUP Cyberlink, an internet-based news medium for alumni, about your appointment as dean of the projected AUP College of Medicine.  The information was so sketchy (see below), in my opinion, that I was curious to find out more by asking you directly.  Would you mind filling in more personal details and relevant background information that may have been omitted, perhaps inadvertently or due to space limitations, but that you may want to share with the general public. Speaking of FB, I moderate a blog in connection with the AUP COM Missions Project that you're most welcome to join if you like:   http://www.facebook.com/groups/149869918437542/

Thank you for your kind attention and blessings on you today.

From the AUP Cyberlink:

The Board in January 2012 had acted to accept the sole applicant to the advertised position of College Dean for the future School of Medicine of AUP.

Dr. Doris Adsuara Mendoza, MD, FPPS is presently a professor of medicine at West Visayan State University (WVSU) College of Medicine. She is also a practicing pediatrician with specialty in pediatric cardiology and a fellow in Philippine Pediatric Society. She was connected with WVSU since it started its College of Medicine in late 70s. She will be retiring in her current work in 2013 and would therefore be freely available to accept the new post. She accepted the challenge of being a full-time dean and faculty which include residing in the campus, one of the delicate criteria that was considered in the choice of the dean for the operation of the new AUP’s medicine program.

Dr. Mendoza’s curriculum vitae reveal very rich experience in medicine program like being the present chairperson in the Curriculum Committee of the College Accreditation Task Force and the co-chairperson in the Technical Committee on Problem Based Learning Curriculum and had been chairperson in the Research Committee.

Dr. Mendoza is a baptized Seventh-day Adventist in good standing. She believes and practices the Adventist Health Message and has received certificate of attendance in BioEthics, Wellness and Spirituality from Loma Linda University, and Lifestyle Medicine from Uchee PinesLifestyle Center in Alabama USA.
